Reddit Ads for BJJ, Muay Thai and MMA Gyms: Who’s There and How Targeting Works

Reddit’s audience leans younger and more male than Facebook’s, which makes it a logical place for a BJJ academy, Muay Thai gym or MMA gym to look for new adult members. Its ad platform can target by community, keyword, interest and location. But no one has published Reddit ad results for gyms, the agency we spoke to has not yet run them for gyms, and this journal’s publisher has not seen great results from Reddit for his own advertising. Here is what the platform offers, as of September 2026, and how to test it without wasting money.

The subject came up on a recent coaching call among martial arts school and gym owners. An account manager at an ad agency that runs Meta, Google and Reddit campaigns said the agency is expanding into Reddit and Google for martial arts clients but has not yet run Reddit ads for gyms. Reddit’s own sales representatives had shared case studies from subscription services and schools, not from gyms.

Who actually uses Reddit?

Younger adults and men, more than the population as a whole. Pew Research Center’s survey of 5,022 US adults (conducted 5 February to 18 June 2025, published 20 November 2025) found that 26 per cent of US adults say they ever use Reddit, up from 18 per cent in 2021.

US adults who say they ever use… Reddit Facebook Instagram
All adults 26% 71% 50%
Men 29% 63% 44%
Women 23% 78% 55%
Ages 18–29 48% 68% 80%
Ages 30–49 35% 80% 62%
Ages 50–64 16% 74% 40%
Ages 65+ 6% 57% 19%

Unlike Facebook and Instagram, which reach a larger share of women than men, Reddit reaches a larger share of men. Stephen Oliver, a 10th Degree Black Belt and the publisher of this journal, said on the call that he had expected Reddit to be female-dominated and found instead a very strong male audience under 35. Pew does not publish a combined age-and-gender figure, so “men under 35” cannot be quantified from its data, but the direction matches. For an adult-heavy BJJ, Muay Thai or MMA gym trying to reach men aged 25 to 40, Oliver said, that gives Reddit potential.

Scale is real. Reddit reported 130.3 million daily active uniques worldwide in the second quarter of 2026, 53.2 million of them in the US (results published 30 July 2026). The agency account manager said a substantial number of Reddit users are not on any Meta platform. That is plausible given the Pew figures, but we found no published data measuring the overlap, so treat it as the agency’s view.

How does Reddit ad targeting work?

Reddit lets advertisers target by community (named subreddits), by keyword (the words in posts and conversations), by interest (groups of related communities) and by location, alongside custom audiences built from a website pixel, engagement or customer lists, and lookalikes of those audiences. The keyword and community options are what set it apart from Meta: you can reach people in the conversations about your sport.

Targeting option What it does Use for a gym
Community Shows ads to people active in named subreddits r/bjj, r/MuayThai, r/MMA, plus your city’s own subreddit; always combine with location, because the sport communities are international
Keyword Places ads alongside posts and conversations containing chosen words Beginner phrases: “first BJJ class”, “starting Muay Thai”, “how to choose a gym”
Interest Broad groups built from activity across many communities Fitness, combat sports; wider reach, lower relevance; a control group, not the main bet
Location Country, US state, designated market area, and city (US only, in 210 metro areas) The smallest area Reddit’s help centre lists is a city, not a radius, so expect spill-over beyond your drive time
Custom audiences Website visitors (via Reddit Pixel), engagers, customer lists Retarget visitors to your trial page; exclude current members
Lead generation ads An on-Reddit form, pre-filled where possible Trial sign-ups without leaving the app; follow up within minutes

For measurement, Reddit offers the Reddit Pixel and a Conversions API, which sends conversions from your server or booking system. Reddit launched lead generation ads in public beta in July 2024, with a Zapier connection to pass leads into a CRM (Search Engine Land, 26 July 2024). Reddit’s help centre also has a demographics targeting page, but we could not load it, so check in the ad account which age and gender options are available to you.

The location point matters most for gyms. Reddit’s help centre says city-level targeting covers US cities in 210 metro areas and lists no radius or ZIP-code option. At least one third-party guide claims radius targeting exists; Reddit’s own page does not say so. Compare that with the three-to-seven-mile radius most gyms draw from.

Will Reddit leads be better or just more expensive?

Probably both, if the agency’s experience on other platforms holds. The account manager said higher-intent platforms such as Google and Reddit tend to produce fewer leads at a higher cost per lead, but better quality. Better quality should show up later in the funnel: more trials attended, a higher trial-to-member conversion, lower churn. That is the argument; no gym results have been published to prove it on Reddit.

The honest position, September 2026

We found no published Reddit advertising results for BJJ academies, Muay Thai gyms or MMA gyms. The agency on the call has not yet run Reddit ads for gyms. Oliver said “we really haven’t seen great results with Reddit yet” from advertising his own coaching programme. Reddit’s case studies shared with the agency came from other sectors. Anyone who tells you Reddit is a proven gym channel is ahead of the evidence.

Does Reddit matter even if you never run an ad?

Yes, because Reddit content now feeds search results and AI answers. The agency account manager said Reddit and X posts now often appear among the top Google results. Oliver added that ChatGPT has a relationship with Reddit and pulls Reddit data, and that Grok, xAI’s assistant, pulls from X in real time. X’s help centre says Grok can search public X posts and the web in real time.

The licensing facts, stated accurately: Reddit signed a data licensing deal with Google in February 2024, reported at about US$60 million a year. OpenAI announced its own partnership with Reddit in May 2024, giving it access to Reddit content for ChatGPT. Neither deal is exclusive; Reddit licenses to both. On 22 July 2026 CNBC reported, following a Wall Street Journal story, that Reddit had discussed not renewing the Google deal or restricting Google’s access; Reddit shares fell sharply that day. As of September 2026 we found no announcement that the Google deal has been renewed, restricted or ended, and reports disagree on when it expires: some said it was ending soon, a Yahoo Finance analysis on 2 September 2026 said the Google and OpenAI deals run to 2027.

For a gym, that means what people say about you on r/bjj or your city’s subreddit can end up in the answer someone gets when they ask an AI assistant for “the best BJJ gym near me”. Take part honestly, as the owner or a coach, and follow each community’s rules. Reddit’s spam policy tells people whose posts are mainly links to their own business to be thoughtful about frequency “or consider advertising opportunities”, and moderators decide what counts as spam in their community. Gym promotion dropped into r/bjj is likely to be removed and remembered.

How should a gym test Reddit ads?

As a controlled experiment with a fixed budget, a fixed end date and a decision rule written down in advance. The agency view that Reddit yields fewer, better leads can only be tested by following each lead all the way to a paying member.

A disciplined Reddit test

1. One offer, one page. A single trial offer and a landing page with the Reddit Pixel installed, or a Reddit lead form connected to your CRM.

2. Tight location. The smallest area Reddit offers around your gym, usually your city or metro area, knowing some of the spend will fall outside your drive time.

3. Separate ad groups. Community targeting (sport subreddits plus your city subreddit), keyword targeting (beginner phrases) and interest targeting, each on its own budget so you can see which works.

4. Exclude members. Upload your current member list as an exclusion audience.

5. Measure to the member. Track trial bookings, trial attendance, trial-to-member conversion and cost per new member, and compare the same weeks on Meta and Google. Keep watching churn on Reddit-sourced members for 90 days.

6. Decide on the date. Stop, scale or adjust on the date you set. Do not extend a test because the clicks look cheap.

Write ads that sound like a coach, not a brochure. Reddit users are sceptical of advertising and can reply to ads; answer questions, do not argue. More gym-specific operations coverage is in BJJ Corner, agencies that serve the industry are listed in our marketing agencies directory, and terms such as cost per lead and churn are defined in the glossary.

Frequently asked questions

Is Reddit a good place to advertise a BJJ or MMA gym?

It may be. Reddit’s users skew male and younger than Facebook’s, and it can target sport communities and keywords. But as of September 2026 no Reddit ad results for gyms have been published, so treat it as a test, not a proven channel.

What share of US men and women use Reddit?

Pew Research Center found 29 per cent of US men and 23 per cent of US women say they ever use Reddit, in a survey conducted from February to June 2025. Among adults aged 18 to 29 the figure was 48 per cent.

Can Reddit ads target a small radius around my gym?

Reddit’s help centre lists country, US state, designated market area and city targeting, with city targeting available for US cities in 210 metro areas. It does not list radius or ZIP-code targeting, so expect some spend outside your drive time.

Can I just post about my gym in r/bjj instead of paying for ads?

Not as a promotion. Reddit’s spam policy asks people whose posts are mainly about their own business to be thoughtful about frequency or to consider advertising, and moderators decide what counts as spam. Take part honestly and follow each community’s rules.

Does Reddit content affect AI answers about my gym?

It can. Google and OpenAI both have data licensing deals with Reddit, signed in 2024 and not exclusive, and Reddit posts often appear in Google results. What people say about your gym on Reddit may show up in AI answers.

How do I know if a Reddit test worked?

Measure cost per new member, not cost per click. Track trial bookings, attendance, trial-to-member conversion and early churn, and compare the same weeks on Meta and Google.

Could not confirm: subreddit member counts (Reddit blocked automated checks; we have left numbers out). Reddit’s age and gender targeting options (its demographics help page would not load). Radius targeting, which one third-party guide claims but Reddit’s location page does not list. The overlap between Reddit and Meta users (the agency’s view; no published measure found). Pew does not publish Reddit use for men under 35 specifically. The Google deal’s expiry date and the outcome of renewal talks: reports disagree, and we found no announcement as of 24 September 2026. The roughly $60 million a year figure for Google was reported by the press in 2024 (Fortune and others), not disclosed by the companies. No published Reddit ad results for martial arts gyms exist that we could find.
