ChatGPT Ads and Apple Maps Ads: What a Local Martial Arts School Can Actually Buy in 2026
Two new ad platforms opened to small businesses in 2026: ads inside ChatGPT and ads inside Apple Maps. For a martial arts school that draws its students from a few miles around the building, they are not equal. Apple Maps ads are built for the moment someone nearby is looking for a place to go; ChatGPT ads reach only people on the free tiers who happen to be asking about something relevant, and owners who have tried them report very little volume at local scale. Here is what each platform actually sells, as of September 2026, and how a school owner should test them.
The question came up on a recent coaching call among martial arts school owners. Chief Master Greg Moody, a school owner and MAPRO columnist, has been experimenting with both platforms for his own schools and for a directory site he runs. (Disclosure: Moody also works as a sales representative for Rev Marketing, a Google Ads and SEO agency.) An account manager at an ad agency that runs Meta, Google and Reddit campaigns for martial arts clients added what that agency has seen. Their views are reported below as views, not as industry data; no platform has published results for martial arts schools.
Can a martial arts school advertise on ChatGPT?
Yes, in principle. OpenAI began testing ads in ChatGPT in the United States on 9 February 2026, opened a self-serve Ads Manager in beta on 5 May 2026, and by September 2026 its help centre listed more than 50 countries where a business can buy ads itself, including the US, Canada, the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand. The practical question is not whether you can buy, but whether a local school will get enough of the right people to see the ad.
According to OpenAI’s help centre, ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans only. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not see ads. OpenAI says it does not show ads to accounts identified as belonging to users under 18, and does not place ads near conversations about personal health, mental health or politics. Ads are labelled as sponsored and shown separately from ChatGPT’s answer; Axios’s example at launch was a grocery delivery ad after a recipe question.
Ads are matched to the context and intent of the current conversation and, if the user has ad personalisation switched on, to past chats and memory. Advertisers receive aggregated reporting, not access to conversations. OpenAI’s 5 May announcement added cost-per-click bidding alongside cost-per-thousand-impressions bidding, plus a pixel and a Conversions API for measurement.
Why is ChatGPT ad volume so low for a local school?
Because two filters stack on top of each other: the person must be on a free tier, and they must be asking ChatGPT about something relevant at that moment. Moody said volume for a martial arts school was “really, really low” for exactly that reason. Like Google, he said, ChatGPT serves on intent: the user has to be asking about martial arts or a related fitness activity. “If I was advertising nationally it’s very interesting,” he said, but for a local school “you’re not.”
Stephen Oliver, a 10th Degree Black Belt and the publisher of this journal, put the local arithmetic plainly: when a school is targeting a three-to-seven-mile radius, the size of the eligible pool makes the difference. The agency account manager said the agency’s team has run ChatGPT ads for other clients and found volume low unless the advertiser is a big player with a larger budget; the agency considers the channel not yet relevant for gyms and is watching it.
Targeting is improving. Trade reports in August 2026 (Wizard of Ads, 13 August; Ready2GEO) described US targeting by state, designated market area and ZIP code, and OpenAI’s campaign documentation was updated on 24 August to mention “finer geographic targeting where available”. WebFX reported in August 2026 that there was no minimum spend for self-serve campaigns and that customer-list audiences require at least 25,000 matched users, which rules out a school’s own member list. We could not confirm the ZIP-code option or the minimums directly from OpenAI.
What are Apple Maps ads, and where do they appear?
Apple Maps ads are paid placements for local businesses inside the Maps app, sold through Apple Business, Apple’s free platform that replaced Apple Business Connect, Apple Business Essentials and Apple Business Manager on 14 April 2026. Apple announced the ads on 24 March 2026; campaign creation opened in the US and Canada in mid-August, and MacRumors reported ads appearing for users around 25 August.
Ads appear in two places, according to Apple’s advertiser page: in search results, when someone searches for a type of business, and in a Suggested Places section before the user searches. Reports say one ad is shown per set of results and that each ad carries a blue “Ad” label. Users cannot switch the ads off.
Apple’s pitch is privacy. It says personal data stays on the device, ad interactions are not associated with the user’s Apple Account and data is not shared with third parties. PPC Land reported that targeting is contextual only: the search term, device location, map area and time of day, with no retargeting or identity-based audiences. WordStream (15 September 2026) described an auction with cost-per-tap or cost-per-thousand-impressions pricing, keyword selection and negative keywords, ad scheduling and a monthly budget; Apple’s own page says advertisers set their own budget and can start and stop at any time. Apple has not published typical prices.
Eligibility matters. The business must have a claimed location in Apple Business, and only businesses in the US and Canada can buy Maps ads so far. Home services, alcohol brands, gambling, dating, crypto ATMs and some other categories are excluded. We found no exclusion for martial arts or fitness in the published lists, but Apple notes that other eligibility limits may apply. Apple was offering early advertisers a 15 per cent credit on spend, capped at US$1,000 a month, for those enrolling by 11 October 2026.
Moody’s early verdict on Apple Maps ads: “very interesting” and “not too expensive”. That is one owner’s experience, not a benchmark.
How do the new platforms compare for a local school?
| Platform | Who sees the ads | How targeting works | Fit for a local school | What to test first |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT ads | Free and Go users only; not Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise or Edu; not under-18s | Context and intent of the conversation, plus history if personalisation is on; geographic targeting reported down to US state, DMA and ZIP | Weak for now: small pool within a few miles; owners and an agency report low volume | Nothing, unless you run several locations or a regional brand; watch for local reporting |
| Apple Maps ads | iPhone, iPad and Mac Maps users in the US and Canada; users cannot opt out | Contextual: search term, device location, map area, time of day; keywords and negative keywords reported | Promising: reaches people actively looking for a nearby place | A small monthly cap on search-result ads for your programmes’ core terms |
| Google Maps (via Google Ads) | Google Maps users, as part of wider campaigns | Performance Max, Search or Smart campaigns with a linked Business Profile or location assets | Proven channel, but you cannot buy Maps placements on their own | Check your existing Google campaigns carry location assets |
| Apple Business listing (organic) | All Apple Maps users, in more than 200 countries and regions | Not an ad: Apple’s ranking of your place card | Essential and free | Claim and complete it this week |
On Google, the Google Ads help centre lists four Maps formats: promoted pins, Map search ads, Map suggest ads and placesheet ads. Each runs through campaign types that also serve elsewhere, so Maps cannot be bought in isolation. We could not confirm from Google whether martial arts schools qualify for Google Local Services Ads, so that product is left out of this comparison.
What should a school owner do now?
Start with the free step. Claim and complete your listing in Apple Business whether or not you ever buy an ad: name, category, hours, photos, website, phone and a booking or trial link. Apple lists a claimed location as a requirement for Maps ads, and a complete place card is what any searcher sees first. Schools outside the US and Canada should do this too; the listing is available far more widely than the ads.
The test rules
One platform at a time. Run a new channel alongside what already works, not instead of it.
Set the cap before you start. Decide the monthly amount you are prepared to lose to learn, and the date you will judge the test.
Judge on cost per enrolment, not cost per click. Divide the spend by the number of new enrolments you can trace to the platform. Taps, clicks and calls are only the first step.
Track the source at the front desk. Ask every enquiry where they found you, and record it in your management software.
For Apple Maps, a school in the US or Canada can reasonably run a small, capped test on search-result ads for the terms people actually type: “karate”, “martial arts”, “BJJ”, “kids martial arts” and similar, with negative keywords for anything you do not teach. Compare the cost per enrolment against Google and Meta over the same weeks.
For ChatGPT, the case for waiting is stronger. Multi-location operators and regional brands may find a test worthwhile; a single school drawing from a few miles is likely to see very little delivery, as the owners and agency on the call reported. The better ChatGPT investment for most schools is organic: making sure the school is described accurately across the web so that AI assistants recommend it. MAPRO’s AI Implementation section covers that work, and our directory of marketing agencies lists firms that serve the industry. Terms such as cost per lead are defined in the glossary.
Frequently asked questions
Who sees ChatGPT ads?
According to OpenAI, ads may appear for users on the Free and Go plans. Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu accounts do not see ads, and OpenAI says it does not show ads to accounts identified as belonging to users under 18.
Are ChatGPT ads worth it for a single martial arts school?
Probably not yet. Ads show only to free-tier users who are asking about something relevant, so the pool within a few miles of one school is small. Owners and an agency account manager on a recent coaching call reported very low volume for local advertisers.
Where do Apple Maps ads appear?
In Apple Maps search results when someone searches for a type of business, and in the Suggested Places section before they search. Reports say one ad is shown per set of results, labelled Ad.
Can schools outside the US and Canada buy Apple Maps ads?
Not as of September 2026. Apple Maps ads are available only to businesses located in the US and Canada, although the free Apple Business listing is available in more than 200 countries and regions.
What should I do first?
Claim and complete your free Apple Business listing, then run one small, capped paid test at a time and judge it on cost per enrolment rather than cost per click.

Could not confirm: ChatGPT ZIP-code targeting, the absence of a minimum spend and the 25,000-user custom-audience threshold come from trade reports, not OpenAI pages we could read. Sources count ChatGPT self-serve markets differently (52, 54 and 63 in reports from 2 to 23 September 2026); the list is changing weekly. Apple has not published Maps ad prices, and its pricing model (cost per tap or per thousand impressions) is as reported by WordStream. Sources give slightly different Apple Maps start dates (campaign creation from 14 August; ads showing between 21 and 25 August). We could not confirm whether martial arts schools qualify for Google Local Services Ads. No platform has published results for martial arts schools; the comments from Moody and the agency account manager are their own experience.
