Yutaka Yaguchi, 1932–2023: Shotokan in the Mountain States
Yutaka Yaguchi was one of the first graduates of the Japan Karate Association’s instructor course, and in 1965 the JKA sent him to America. He settled in Denver in 1972 and spent more than four decades building Shotokan karate across the Mountain States. He died on 26 October 2023, aged 90.

Kure and the instructor course
Yaguchi was born in Kure, the naval port near Hiroshima; one account says he saw the atomic bombing of Hiroshima from the shipyard where he worked. He began karate in 1952 while at Nihon University, training under Gichin Funakoshi and Masatoshi Nakayama. In 1957 he entered the JKA’s new instructor course and graduated in 1959, one of the first people to complete it, alongside men such as Hirokazu Kanazawa and Takayuki Mikami.
America
On 5 June 1965 Yaguchi arrived in the United States, sent by Nakayama to assist Hidetaka Nishiyama in Los Angeles. In 1972 he moved to Denver at the invitation of a local karate teacher, Joe Costello, and coached the U.S. team at an international Shotokan tournament the same year.
In 1974 he founded ISKF Colorado. When Teruyuki Okazaki and others broke away to form the International Shotokan Karate Federation in 1977, Yaguchi was part of it, and the new federation held its first meeting in Denver the following year. He became the ISKF’s vice chief instructor, chairman of its technical committee and chief of its Mountain States region, and from 1986 ran instructor training in Denver. In 2007 he stood with Okazaki when the ISKF left the JKA. He retired in December 2016; his own organization says he later served as a technical adviser to the JKA.
Death
Yaguchi died on 26 October 2023, aged 90. An obituary listing places his death in Lakewood, Colorado; a karate magazine tribute says Denver. We have not found a published cause of death.
What a school owner should take from Yutaka Yaguchi
Yaguchi’s career is a model for building a region, not just a school. From one city he trained the instructors who opened clubs across the Mountain States, and he ran instructor training himself for thirty years.
He also shows the value of patience. He spent seven years in Los Angeles before moving to Denver, and forty years in Denver after that. The owners who build lasting regional reputations are usually the ones who stay.
