Martial Arts Membership Contract Law by Jurisdiction
Sixty-seven jurisdictions — every US state plus the District of Columbia, every Canadian province and territory, and the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand — reviewed for one question: does the local health-club, membership-contract and consumer-protection law reach a martial arts school, and what does it require if it does?
Only three jurisdictions name martial arts in the statute. Maryland, Texas and Virginia. Everywhere else, whether a school is covered is a question of how broadly the local definition is drawn, and that turns on your facilities, your contract length and how your memberships are paid for.
Each entry is graded for how strong the statutory signal is:
Express The statute or its legislative history names martial arts, self-defense schools, karate or judo directly.
Broad No martial-arts wording, but the governing definition covers instruction, training, facilities or memberships for physical exercise widely enough that a school may sit inside it.
General No dedicated health-club definition identified. A school is reached, if at all, through general consumer, contract and direct-selling law.
United States
Fifty states and the District of Columbia. Thirty-seven have a health-club, health-spa or physical-fitness-services statute drawn broadly enough to be a live question for a school; three name martial arts outright.

Canada
All ten provinces and all three territories. Most Canadian coverage runs through general consumer-protection and direct-sellers legislation rather than a dedicated health-club act; Ontario’s personal development services rules and Quebec’s sequential-performance contract rules are the two that matter most in practice.

None of the three has a health-club statute in the American sense. All three reach a school through general consumer law — unfair contract terms, statutory service guarantees and cancellation rights.

|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | General | Consumer Rights Act 2015 and cancellation regulations |
| Australia | Broad | Australian Consumer Law, with state and territory overlays |
| New Zealand | Broad | Fair Trading Act and Consumer Guarantees Act |
Before you act on any of this. These pages provide general information and are not legal advice. Health-club, membership-contract, automatic-renewal, consumer-protection and local licensing laws change and may apply differently depending on the services, facilities, payment terms and location of a martial arts school. Confirm the current statute, regulations and agency guidance, and take advice from a lawyer admitted in the relevant jurisdiction, before changing a contract or a sales process.
