Richard Bresler, 1953-2025: Gracie Jiu-Jitsu’s First American Student
In 1979 a man took a jiu-jitsu lesson from his roommate in Hermosa Beach. He was the first American to do it. Then he put up the money that opened the Gracie Academy, and invested in the first UFC. Every BJJ academy in America runs downstream of that garage.

Richard Bresler was Rorion Gracie’s roommate in Hermosa Beach, California, and in 1979 he took his first lesson — the first American student of Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. He was not a natural athlete and never claimed to be. What he had was money and belief, and he supplied both: he put up the capital that let Rorion open the Gracie Academy, and he was an investor in the first UFC.
He received his black belt in 1998. In February 2025, from a hospital bed, Ryron and Rener Gracie promoted him to coral belt — the fourth American ever to hold that rank. He died five months later.
What a school owner should take from Richard Bresler
He is the patron, not the prodigy, and this industry almost never tells that story.
Every school that exists does so because somebody with no particular talent decided it should. A landlord who took a chance on the lease. A first student who paid in advance. A spouse who covered rent for two years. Bresler is the documented, named version of a person every owner reading this has in their own history and has probably never publicly thanked.
The other lesson is nineteen years from white belt to black belt, and forty-six years of training in total, by a man who described himself as ordinary. If your retention conversations are built entirely around the students who look like champions, you are ignoring the ones who actually build schools.
Sources, and what we could not confirm
- The commonly circulated birth year of 1946 is wrong. A January 2023 profile described him as “nearly 70,” which puts his birth around 1953 and his age at death at roughly 72. No exact date of birth has been published, so we give the age as approximate.
- The coral belt promotion is described in sources as coming from the Gracie Academy line; earlier listings give him as a 6th-degree black belt. “Promoted to coral belt months before his death” is the phrasing the record supports.
