Marcio Stambowsky, 1959-2026: One of Rolls Gracie’s Famous Five

Rolls Gracie died in 1982 having produced a handful of black belts who became the spine of modern Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Marcio Stambowsky was one of them — and, decades later, one of the few who came to America and built a school here.

The “Famous Five” is the name given to the small group of black belts Rolls Gracie produced before his death in 1982 — the men who carried his approach forward into the era that produced the UFC. Stambowsky was among them. He reached 8th degree, the red-and-white belt, and in 2007 relocated to the United States and opened his own academy.

What a school owner should take from Marcio Stambowsky

A meaningful share of this journal’s readership now owns a BJJ academy rather than a traditional school, and the economics differ in one respect that Stambowsky’s career illustrates: in BJJ, lineage is a live commercial asset in a way it no longer is in most striking arts.

A prospective student comparing two karate schools rarely asks who taught the instructor. A prospective BJJ student very often does, and the answer moves the sale. That is worth understanding whichever side of it you are on — if you have the lineage, it belongs on the wall and in the copy; if you do not, you are competing against a credential you cannot acquire and had better compete on something else.

Sources, and what we could not confirm

  • His exact date of birth, place of death and cause are not established in sources we could verify. The age of 66 is as reported.
  • The name and membership of the “Famous Five” is a term of art within BJJ rather than a formally constituted group, and the exact roster varies slightly depending on who is listing it.
  • Principal source: BJJ Doc’s report, April 2026.
