He was known as Sensei Daniel C. Brown Sr., and he was an owner as well as an instructor — the Brown School of Judo and Jujitsu was his. He taught for over five decades. In 1996 he and his son Jeffery, an NCAA national judo champion, co-founded a youth judo programme.

One school. One mid-sized city. Fifty years. A child who trained under him and became a national champion, then built a programme alongside him. No franchise, no seminar circuit, no book. Almost nobody outside Utica knows the name, and several thousand people in Utica do.
This industry’s trade press — this publication included — over-covers the operators with ten locations and under-covers the ones who did this. Both are legitimate businesses. Only one of them is what most of you are actually running.
