Most jiu-jitsu writing is for the competitor. This section is for the person responsible for the room — the academy owner, the head professor, the operator of a multi-academy group. The technical press will tell you what to drill. BJJ Corner tells you what happens to your business when a federation changes a rule, when a walk-in shows up with a rank you have to decide whether to honour, when a green belt turns sixteen, or when the person you were counting on to promote your first home-grown black belt turns out not to be allowed to sign it.
A BJJ academy is not a traditional martial arts school with different pyjamas. The belt system moves slowly, which changes everything about retention. The affiliation structure puts rules between you and your own students’ rank. The kids’ programme runs on a completely separate ladder with hard age gates. Those differences are the subject here.

A note on sourcing
Rank and eligibility rules are the kind of thing owners act on, so in this section we work from the federations’ own current documents rather than from secondary summaries, we name the document and its version, and we say so plainly where two official sources disagree rather than choosing the tidier answer. Where we cannot verify something, we say that too. Reporting is separate from this journal’s commercial relationships; see the editorial policy for how those are disclosed.
