Dale Thompson, died 2026: Seventy Years on the Mat in Orlando
Roughly seventy years of judo, most of it in Florida, and a leadership role in the state’s yudanshakai. The people who hold a regional judo structure together are almost never the people anyone outside it can name.

- Orlando, Florida
- Time on the mat
- Approximately 70 years
- Role

Sensei Dale Thompson was a fixture of Orlando judo and of the Florida Judo Yudanshakai — the regional black belt association that promotes rank, sanctions events and holds the standard across a state. His death was announced by the United States Judo Federation.
What a school owner should take from Dale Thompson
A yudanshakai is the piece of infrastructure that commercial martial arts mostly lacks: a regional body of senior black belts, from different schools, who collectively decide what a rank means and who sanctions the events everyone competes at.
It works because instructors who compete for the same students agree to sit on the same board. That is difficult and thankless and it is the reason judo rank is portable in a way most commercial styles’ rank is not.
If your region has no equivalent, the question is not whether one would be useful. It is who would have to stop treating the school down the road as the enemy for long enough to build it.
