Richard Norton, 1950-2025: The Australian Who Taught Hollywood to Fight
He co-created one of the largest martial arts systems in the southern hemisphere, then spent forty-five years in film — opposite Chuck Norris, three times with Jackie Chan, and finally as the man choreographing the fights in Mad Max: Fury Road. A career built entirely on refusing to pick one lane.

Before the films, Richard Norton co-created Zen Do Kai with Bob Jones — an Australian system that grew into one of the largest school networks in the region. He worked as a bodyguard for touring musicians, which is how he ended up in Los Angeles, which is how he ended up on screen.
His debut was The Octagon in 1980, opposite Chuck Norris. He made three films with Jackie Chan and worked repeatedly with Sammo Hung and Cynthia Rothrock. Then he moved behind the camera, and the second act eclipsed the first: he was fight coordinator on Mad Max: Fury Road, Suicide Squad and The Suicide Squad.
He kept training the whole time. The BJJ black belt under Jean-Jacques Machado came decades into a career in which he was already a recognised master of a striking system — a man in his fifties putting a white belt back on.
What a school owner should take from Richard Norton
His income never came from one source. System co-founder, close protection, on-screen performer, fight choreographer, instructor. Each one fed the others: the system gave him credibility for the bodyguard work, the bodyguard work put him in Los Angeles, Los Angeles made him a screen name, and the screen name sold seminars back home for forty years.
Most school owners have exactly one revenue line and call the rest a distraction. Norton is the counter-example, and the point is not that he diversified — it is that every stream he added made the others more valuable.
The second thing: he earned a black belt in a new art in middle age, publicly, after he was already a grandmaster in another. Every instructor who has quietly stopped being a student should sit with that.
