Screenwriter of The Forbidden Kingdom Reveals Inside Information
By MAPro • Oct 21st, 2008 • Category: Industry Insider, Martial Arts ResoucesIn a recent interview, John Fusco, who wrote the screenplay for The Forbidden Kingdom, revealed that a sequel to the film, featuring both Jackie Chan and Jet Li, is being discussed.
Fusco also talked about how differently Chan and Li approached the movie and his experience working with the two legendary martial arts film stars. According to Fusco, Li wanted to be in the film because he had always wanted to portray the Monkey King, while Chan saw an opportunity finally to work with Li.
He said that Li was a great resource and guide to help emphasize his insights of Buddhist principles, which Fusco had always wanted in the movie, long before Li agreed to appear in the film.
Fusco said that Chan had an entirely different approach to his portion of the script, Yin to Li’s Yang. Fusco claimed that Chan gave him a bottle of Jackie Chan Shiraz for every line of dialogue that Fusco cut. Chan helped Fusco, rewrite the lines, so they were punchier.
Fusco also commented on his “re-imaging” of the classic Akira Kurosawa film, The Seven Samurai. Titled Mag 7, Fusco’s film does not take place in feudal Japan and there are no swords; instead, the story is set in the contemporary world of security contractors.
