Actor Wesley Snipes Convicted of Tax Collection Evasion
By MAPro • May 19th, 2008 • Category: Industry Insider, Martial Arts ResoucesOcala, Florida…Actor Wesley Snipes was convicted in late April on three misdemeanor charges of willfully evading tax collection between 1999-2001. Despite his attorneys’ best effort to keep him from going to prison, the judge sentenced him to three years, one for each count.
For years, Snipes has claimed that his income and assets are not subject to being taxed by the I.R.S.; however, the judge stated that the actor had a “history of contempt over a period of time” for the I.R.S. and American tax laws.
In his statement, read in court, Snipes apologized for his error, but claimed he was “mis-educated” about his responsibilities and then handed the court three checks totaling $5 million dollars. The court accepted the payment, but reluctantly, since the I.R.S. was still determining exactly how much Snipes owes.
Snipes’ attorneys reportedly will appeal his case.
